To work on an 8-month project investigating nonverbal behavioural correlates of trustworthiness intuitions. Through experimental work, you will look at a person’s unconscious nonverbal responses to an untrustworthy actor, and how these responses can be communicated back to the person experiencing them in a way that shapes their response.

You will be involved in all aspects of the research; with prime responsibility for recruitment, testing and data analysis. This will involve using advanced motional capture technologies (e.g., XSens MVN) and associated analytical techniques, on which we will give you training. You will be expected to contribute to journal publications and presentations.

You will join a vibrant group of academic, postdoctoral and PhD researchers engaged in studies of human interaction and security. You should anticipate becoming a member of the Centre for Research Evidence of Security Threats (CREST) and Lancaster’s centre of excellence, Security-Lancaster, which both offer collaboration and further learning opportunities. If desired, there will be an opportunity during the project for the applicant to apply for further research funding or for funding to carry out a PhD.

You should be a self-motivated and ambitious individual with a good first degree (at least a 2.1.) in Psychology or a related field. Experience of conducting experiments, and knowledge of the psychology of trust and/or nonverbal behaviour, will be an advantage.

The first phase of this project is expected to last 8 months. You will initially be appointed on a 3-month fixed-term contract. This will be extended for a further 5 months on the project team successfully securing ethical approval from the Ministry of Defence’s Research Ethics Committee.

The Department of Psychology provides a work environment that strongly supports the individual needs of each employee, promoting a healthy work-life balance. Informal enquiries are welcome, and should be addressed to Dr Stacey Conchie (email: s.conchie@lancaster.ac.uk).
