Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance Applications are invited for the above post based in the Scottish Section of the University of Nottingham’s Hearing Sciences department, located in Glasgow. This is a thriving centre of research into how people use their hearing, how hearing impairment affects them, and how new technologies could help. The successful candidate will develop and execute specific elements of a UKRI funded programme on predictive mechanisms in social interaction. This programme focuses on how people process speech when listening in conversation, and, specifically, how prediction of speech (in terms of content and timing) differs between people with normal and impaired hearing. The post-holder will use eye tracking to address prediction speed and confidence, electroencephalography (EEG) to address oscillatory behaviour, and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to investigate motor simulation. They will also have the opportunity to gain supervision experience, and to lead their own studies, as the project progresses. Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent experience in cognitive science, experimental psychology, neuroscience or a related area. Those near to completion of a PhD are also encouraged to apply. Duties will include designing and running experiments of speech and conversation behaviour, as well as taking the lead with complex data analyses to tie cognitive and neural processing to behaviours such as turn-taking. They will also oversee the work of a research assistant, and support PhD students on the programme. Key requirements are strong statistical skills, experience designing neural/physiological experiments with human participants, and enthusiasm for collaborating with others. Familiarity with the literatures on speech processing or language prediction mechanisms are desirable, as is expertise in relevant techniques (e.g., EEG, TMS, eye-tracking).
