Research Associate/Lab Manager (Part Time, Fixed Term)

We are seeking a Lab Manager with a background in animal-based research, whose primary role will be to assist in managing Professor Nicola Clayton's corvid lab. The post-holder will also be required to contribute to research-led teaching. Please note that participation in research is likely to be on the level of co-supervision, where appropriate, rather than conducting own research, given that the primary focus of this part-time role is on lab management and research-led teaching (see % of duties in further particulars). This job is likely to be ideally suited to a Post-doctoral Researcher looking to expand on their lab management and teaching skills in addition to their previous research background.

The role holder will join Professor Clayton's project investigating causal reasoning in corvids and humans, funded by the European Research Council (ERC), and be based within Comparative Cognition Lab (see: in the Department of Psychology.

The lab manager will be required to take a lead role alongside Prof. Clayton (the Principal Investigator, PI) in various administrative, training and liaison tasks. The role holder will be required to assist in lab and grant administration. They will need to liaise with other members of the lab and technicians, train and co-supervise graduate and undergraduate students, new researchers in the lab and internship visitors involved in any related research projects, and work closely with the PI and other members of the ERC team (Postdocs and Research Assistant). They may also be required to assist in training the corvid groups.

The research-led teaching will involve contributing to supporting and maintaining the University's national and international reputation for excellence in teaching. This will include planning, preparing and delivering lectures and practical classes on comparative cognition and animal behaviour, as well as providing guidance to students and marking exam papers.

Consequently, it is essential that the post-holder has a PhD in Experimental Psychology or a related discipline. It is essential that they have experience of lab management in an animal-based research environment, ideally with species such as corvids, parrots or large mammals, as opposed to more 'standardised' lab species such as rats or mice. It is essential that the role holder has experience in comparative cognition and animal behaviour research, and/or related topics. It is desirable that they have experience of teaching these and/or related topics at university level. It is essential that the post holder is self-motivated and able to work independently, as well as as part of a team. They must have excellent organisational, leadership and communication skills.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31st July 2021 in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment and a standard Disclosure and Barring Service check.
