Duties and Responsibilities

Novel imaging technologies combined with advances in Artificial Intelligence and robotics are creating new possibilities for surgical interventions that exploit near-real-time imaging and imaging-informed information sources and new kinds of surgical tools that change the roles of the surgical team.

Applications are invited for a Post-doctoral Research Fellow position in the Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS) to investigate clinical needs and practices, including how new tools change the ways that the clinical team comprehend their task, how teams engage with innovative technologies, and how new technologies fit within and transform work. The project may involve prototyping and testing novel interfaces to Artificial Intelligence and imaging systems.  The successful applicant will work in a team led by Ann Blandford, with other members of WEISS. They will work closely with clinicians and engineers, translating from empirical research into novel interventions that are ready for testing through clinical trials. The post-holder will also be expected to contribute to reporting findings, both within the WEISS team and at national and international conferences, and to participate in public engagement activities.

Information about WEISS, UCLIC,  and the UCL Institute of Digital Health is available from https://www.ucl.ac.uk/interventional-surgical-scienceshttps://www.ucl.ac.uk/uclic and https://www.ucl.ac.uk/digital-health respectively.

The post is available from 1st January 2020, for 2 years in the first instance.

Key Requirements

Applicants should have obtained a PhD in a relevant subject (e.g. Human–Computer Interaction or Digital Health). Ideal candidates will have a strong background in HCI and enthusiasm for working in healthcare. Applicants should have demonstrated potential for excellent research (e.g., as evidenced by their publication track record in international journals) and the capability and motivation to collaborate within an interdisciplinary research group. The ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary research team is essential.
