Job description

We are looking for a post-doctoral Research Fellow to join the 5-year ESRC/NIHR-funded DETERMIND Programme (DETERMinants of quality of life, care and costs, and consequences of INequalities in people with Dementia and their carers). DETERMIND is a multidisciplinary project which seeks to answer the following questions:

  • What is it that enables one family to live well with dementia and another with ostensibly the same illness and challenges to struggle?

  • Which groups have better or worse outcomes following diagnosis of dementia and why are there inequalities in care and outcomes?

  • What can we learn from the experiences of people with dementia and their carers about how to deliver care and support that maximises quality of life for all?

The postholder will work with and will contribute to the programme as a whole, but will primarily contribute to a workstream on "Understanding decision-making by people with dementia and carers", which will study how social and psychological resources can help us to understand differences in outcomes. The postholder will work collaboratively with the co-investigators leading this workstream (Dr. Eleanor Miles, Prof Jennifer Rusted, and Prof. Peter Harris), and will also work closely with a PhD student to develop a parallel research project investigating decision making in a healthy ageing population.

This post would be ideal for a researcher interested in working within an interdisciplinary team to apply psychological knowledge to a problem with real world impact. The postholder will have the opportunity to develop an original and exciting programme of research into cognitive ageing and dementia, and to develop this into funding proposals to support future independent work.

To discuss the role further please contact Dr. Eleanor Miles (
