Job Description


Overall purpose:

To work within the group of Dr Anne Bertolotti at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) and provide research support for work on protein phosphatases.

Main duties/Key responsibilities:

• To clone new phosphatases cDNA.
• To express phosphatases in mammalian cells.
• To purify phosphatases and their interacting partners.
• To perform proteomic analyses of phosphatase interactors.
• To express and purify recombinant phosphatases.
• To prioritise and plan experiments in consultation with senior group members.
• To collaborate with LMB facilities (proteomic, etc).
• Ensure and maintain an efficient and tidy Laboratory.
• Keep detailed and accurate records of all experiments undertaken.

Working relationships:

You will report to Dr Anne Bertolotti. You will interact and collaborate with Postdoctoral Scientists, Research Support Staff and Students, not only in your Group, but also across the LMB, with LMB facilities and with external Groups as necessary. You will have day to day guidance by one or two identified postdoctoral scientist.

Person Specification  

Education / qualifications / training required:

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in relevant subject.
• Relevant experience.

Desirable: Relevant Master’s Degree or relevant laboratory experience.

Previous work experience required:

• Basic bench work skills.
• Basic molecular and cell biology experience.

Desirable: Experience in protein purification and/or proteomic.

Knowledge and experience:

Creativity and initiative

• Ability to carry out experimental programme.
• A high degree of precision and attention to details.

Independent working

• Proven skills in working independently to solve experimental problems.
• Ability to plan work and manage time effectively.

Desirable: Can independently advance existing techniques and implement new methods.

Verbal and written communication skills

Essential:Good written and verbal communication skills.

• Has made contributions to scientific papers.
• IT skills, including Word and Excel.

Personal skills / behaviours / qualities:

• Motivated individual with a strong desire for self and team development.
• An ability to learn quickly with a view to being able to work independently.
• A strong desire to learn new techniques.
• Motivated to deliver high quality data. 
• Ability to multitask.
• Ability to prioritise tasks and have good time management.

Desirable: Skilled individual interested in interacting with all members of the lab.
