About the department

At the Department of Applied Information Technology, critical and interdisciplinary research is conducted in an international environment of the highest quality with great relevance to the surrounding society. Our researchers are in the midst of the society debate to help explain and problematize IT- and society-related challenges linked to the digitalization of society.

We develop the individual's knowledge and ability to analyze, understand and handle various aspects of IT as well as the interaction between human and technology in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, digital innovation, e-Health, Internet of Things, mobile communication, robots, social media and IT in schools and teaching.
We provide education at Bachelor's and Master's level anchored in research and the development of society.

The department is located in the knowledge-intensive cluster at Lindholmen, and has well-developed collaborations with both business and the public sector as well as the civil society.

The department works actively to create a working environment that promotes gender equality and equal treatment and counteracts all forms of discrimination, harassment and offensive conduct. The department´s equal rights representative participates in the recruitment process.

Cognitive science and Communication at the department

The Division conducts a broad research with an interest in human cognition, interaction and communication in relation to society's digitalization and social and cognitive conditions, at the individual, group and organizational level.

Research in cognitive science is mainly carried out in the areas of artificial intelligence and psychology. Topics include: machine learning, neuro-computational modeling, the role of emotion in multimodal interaction, human-technology interaction (focus on robotics and gamification), memory of fictional information, psychology of influence, and decision support systems.

Research in the Division focused on Communication broadly falls into three areas: digital communication concerning both how digitality affects communication and how digital technologies can be used to study communication; intercultural communication exploring the influence of culture on communication in contexts ranging from business to cooperation and conflict; and organizational communication focusing on issues, approaches to, and challenges of, communication within organizations, and between organizations and external stakeholders.

Job assignments

The position includes teaching as well as research. As Senior Lecturer you are expected to:

  • Teach in subjects related to cognitive science.
  • Supervise students at Bachelor's and Master's levels and develop the competency to supervise at Ph.D. level.
  • Conduct research, apply for grants from external funders and be prepared to take on roles with responsibility for project coordination or management.
  • Be able to be physically present at the workplace and collaborate with, and support, other colleagues in the division.
  • Use your interdisciplinary skill set to collaborate both within and outside the department.
  • Be prepared to participate in the administration and management of the department.
  • Undertake administrative tasks related to educational activities.


The eligibility for employment as a teacher is stated in chapter 4, sections 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg's employment procedure. To be eligible for employment as a Senior Lecturer you should have demonstrated pedagogical skills, completed a doctoral degree or have equivalent scientific competence or any other skill that is important with regard to the subject content of the employment and the tasks to be included in the employment.


In the appointment, special emphasis will be placed on the degree of scientific- and teaching aptitude, which will be assessed with equal importance.

Scientific proficiency must be documented through international scientific publication in the field of cognitive science and the focus of the advertised position, such as cognitive technology, social cognition, emotion, interaction, decision making and games, cognitive neuroscience and human-technology interaction. Assessment of scientific proficiency includes the ability to independently plan, initiate and conduct research, the ability to collaborate in development and research as well as contribute to a research environment and the international scientific community. Knowledge of experimental methods and statistics is considered meritorious as well as successful work to obtain external funds.

When assessing pedagogical skills, special emphasis is placed on work with teaching on cognitive science or closely related areas. Assessment of pedagogical skills will include the candidate’s experience of planning, implementation, management, evaluation, supervision and examination, as well as course development and development of educational materials and similar pedagogical activities. Both pedagogical skills and experience must be well documented so that their quality can be assessed.

Formal training in higher education teaching or equivalent is a merit. Applicants who lack formal training in higher education teaching or equivalent, are expected to undergo such, or to gain equivalent knowledge, within one year from the date of employment.

Weight will also be attached to documented ability and skill to collaborate with others and to lead and administer teaching and research, and to inform, to cooperate with the surrounding community and to work for the utilization of the university's research. Furthermore, personal suitability, primarily the ability to take responsibility, independence and communication skills are taken into account.

Applicants should be fluent in English. Teaching, research seminars and discussions are conducted in English. Swedish language proficiency is not a requirement for appointment, but the applicant must in the long run be prepared to take on administrative and pedagogical tasks that require an understanding and use of Swedish.

The university will in this recruitment make a holistic assessment of aptitude and skills and select the applicant who is deemed best qualified to conduct and develop current tasks of the position, interact and collaborate with other staff, and contribute to the positive development of the Division and the Department.


The position is a permanent employment at a scope of 100 %, and is placed at the Department of Applied Information Technology.
Probationary employment is applied for all permanent employments.
Start date according to agreement.
