The recently established UNSW Institute for Climate Risk and Response (ICRR) brings together expertise from across the Faculties of Science, Business and Law and Justice. In partnership with industry, the ICRR will drive an innovative research agenda, and be a focus of debate on the risks and opportunities of our changing climate. As a leading voice in climate risk and response both nationally and in the Asia-Pacific it will inform end-users' risk management frameworks and allow robust planning regarding the impacts of climate change for business, government and policy makers.

The School of Psychology at UNSW, the leading Psychology school in Australia, recognised nationally and internationally for its excellence in research and teaching, is playing a key role in building the capacity of the ICRR.

The ICRR will focus initially on three priority areas:

  • effective communication and translation of climate science to inform decision-making and policy development,
  • establishing effective climate risk management frameworks to address the social, environmental, governance and economic impacts of climate change,
  • linking improved representations of human behaviour with climate models to enhance projections, facilitate understanding and promote behavioural change.

The Lecturer (Level B)/ Senior Lecturer (Level C) in Behavioural Science is expected to carry out activities to develop their scholarly research and professional activities both nationally and internationally and to contribute significantly to achieving the teaching and service missions of the Institute for Climate Risk and Response (ICRR), the School of Psychology and the Faculty of Science. This role is designed to augment and complement the ICRR and the School of Psychology’s existing strengths in behavioural and cognitive science, with a focus on application to the area of climate risk and response. The applicant should be willing to work in an interdisciplinary research environment alongside leading experts in behavioural science, climate science, business, economics, law, and governance to create world-leading research into climate risk and response.


About the role

  • Level B ($119 - $140) Level C ($145K - $166K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 5 years – Convertible Tenure Track
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer reports to the Director of the ICRR, Professor Ben Newell and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

LEVEL B:

  • Engage in individual and/or collaborative research of an internationally recognised standard in an area of behavioural science relevant to the ICRR and the School of Psychology.
  • Create scholarly impact which is recognised by international peers in the advancement of behavioural science, Psychology or related disciplines.
  • Conduct research/scholarly independently or as a member of a team, and design research projects.
  • Undertake the development of applications for competitive funding, including participating as co- investigator and/or chief investigator in competitive grant applications.
  • Mentor and guide students and colleagues and develop the next generation of academics through in the supervision of higher degree research students.
  • Demonstrate and continuously develop a well-defined teaching philosophy that inspires student learning.
  • Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements and support students in postgraduate and undergraduate courses in line with UNSW policy.
  • Design and develop learning activities and resources, and provide assessment and feedback using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments.
  • Maintain professional development in pedagogy, disciplinary knowledge and minimum professional accreditation requirements (where needed).
  • Make a positive contribution to both the ICRR and School meetings and seminars and be a member of the Institute, School and Faculty committees as required.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct
  • Cooperate with all health & safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.

LEVEL C:
(in addition to the above)

  • Make independent contributions to research that have a significant impact in their field of expertise and create a nationally and internationally recognised research track record in an area of Behavioural science and/or Psychology relevant to the ICRR and the School.
  • Develop and lead a research group in an area of Behavioural Science relevant to the ICRR and School.
  • Attract peer recognition and establish research network/s at the national and international level.
  • Obtain research income from nationally competitive research grants (and/or research fellowships) at or above the level of leading international universities.
  • Mentor and guide students, groups, and colleagues; supervise HDRs to timely completion as primary supervisor; and contribute to HDR review panels.
  • Apply a well-defined teaching philosophy and a critically reflective teaching practice that inspires student learning.
  • Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements, and support students in both postgraduate and undergraduate courses in line with UNSW policy. 
  • Design and develop learning activities and resources and provide assessment and feedback at both course and program level using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments.
  • Work collaboratively to identify and apply for internal education funding opportunities. 

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

LEVEL B:

  • PhD in Psychology or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
  • Proven commitment to keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • An aptitude for teaching and learning design, development and delivery at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • Ability to use educational technology platforms and online delivery methods to deliver courses.
  • Strong teaching capability and a passion for educational excellence.
  • Ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • High level communication skills and ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.
  • Ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships, including those with external stakeholders.
  • Evidence of the capacity for highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

LEVEL C:
(in addition to the above)

  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches, development and delivery of courses and programs, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • Experience of implementing educational technologies and online delivery methods.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence and fostering this in others.
  • Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Experience in successfully recruiting and supervising high calibre students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships, including those with external stakeholders.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
