Position summary

The Bionics Institute is seeking a researcher with a leading international track record in the field of translational hearing research. This position represents a unique opportunity for the right person to make a substantial difference to the lives of people with a hearing loss, through translating innovations in hearing instruments or clinical management into commercial or clinical use. The successful applicant will be a leading member of the Translational Hearing Research Group, reporting to Professor McKay, and will have the opportunity to work closely with engineers, clinicians, and scientists in the team and across the Institute. She/he will provide strong input into existing projects of the team and will develop and seek funding for new projects that are consistent with the strategic goals of the Institute.

The new position offers an opportunity for a person with a strong track record of leadership.  The successful applicant should bring high-level expertise to the group relevant to the neuroscience of hearing, and must have broad multidisciplinary understanding in the area of hearing research and its clinical applications.  This is an exciting career development opportunity for an outstanding researcher, with potential for an ongoing leadership role within the Institute.

The Translational Hearing Research Group, led by Professor Colette McKay, includes neuroscientists, clinicians, and engineers, and has ongoing projects to translate innovative basic science into improved clinical outcomes for patients with cochlear implants and other hearing instruments. Our group applies neuroimaging (fNIRS and EEG), psychophysics, and speech understanding methods with adults and children with hearing loss. We translate the knowledge gained into innovations in diagnosis and clinical management, or improved function of hearing instruments, to improve the quality of life of these hearing impaired individuals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in an area of expertise relevant to innovations in hearing research, for example, neuroimaging, signal processing, speech understanding, psychophysics, cognition of hearing, or language development
  • Obtain funding for research that is consistent with the strategic goals of the Bionics Institute from a range of sources such as government, philanthropic, and commercial entities
  • Prepare progress reports, scientific manuscripts, and seminars on the research and translational activities
  • Supervise and mentor students and research staff in the Translational Hearing Research Group
  • Support existing collaborations and develop new linkages with industry and clinical partners
  • Contribute to and support the leadership and strategies of the Institute


Required skills and qualifications


  • A PhD qualification in a relevant area
  • A minimum 5 years post-doctoral experience with an outstanding track record including high-level publications and grant funding success
    • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Proven expertise in a relevant area of hearing research
  • Experience working with industry and clinical partners
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills relevant to interaction with clinicians and recipients of hearing devices as well as other members of the research team and external collaborators
  • Excellent written communication skills



  • Experience working with human participants in a clinical setting
  • Experience with software development in a research environment
  • Experience with analysis and processing of neurophysiological signals
